What is engineered wood installation?

Engineered hardwood has a real-wood surface bonded to a layered core. It is wood flooring, with natural grain and character, rather than a printed wood-look surface. Its construction usually limits seasonal movement compared with solid wood.

When engineered wood makes sense

Consider it for wide-plank designs, concrete subfloors, or rooms where an approved product provides more installation options. Some products are approved below grade or over radiant heat, but those applications still need moisture control and product-specific instructions.

Engineered versus solid hardwood

Both give you real wood underfoot. Solid hardwood can offer more opportunities for future refinishing when enough usable material remains. Engineered wood can be a better fit when substrate, height, or dimensional stability matters most. Price and quality vary greatly in both categories.

Floating, glue-down, or nail-down

A floating floor joins the boards to one another over an approved underlayment without fastening them to the subfloor. Glue-down attaches approved boards with a full-spread flooring adhesive. Nail or staple installation uses a suitable wood substrate and the specified fastener system. Thickness alone does not determine eligibility: the core, joint design, and manufacturer approval also matter.

What to know before choosing

Engineered wood is not automatically waterproof. Refinishing depends on the usable wear layer, construction, condition, and manufacturer guidance; some floors should not be sanded. A floating installation can have a different sound and feel from a bonded floor, so discuss expectations as well as appearance.

Our process

Careful preparation. A method that fits your floor.

The exact products and steps depend on the floor and the agreed scope. Manufacturer instructions guide the installation and finish system.

  1. Review the actual product

Check permitted installation methods, wear layer, grade suitability, and any heating or sound-control requirements.

  2. Measure and prepare the substrate

Assess moisture and flatness, then address preparation and any approved vapor-control system. A beautiful plank cannot compensate for an unsuitable base.

  3. Install the specified system

Follow the chosen product for underlayment, adhesive, fasteners, expansion clearances, and transitions. Do not add extra soft padding beneath a product that does not allow it.

  4. Complete and care for the floor

Finish edges and transitions and explain the cleaning method, humidity needs, and protection recommended for your finish.

Questions homeowners ask

Is engineered wood fake wood?

No. The visible wear surface is real wood. Its layered construction distinguishes it from solid wood.

Can every engineered floor float?

No. Floating, glue-down, and mechanical fastening are product-specific options, not interchangeable defaults.
